Major Historical Monuments of Assam
Sivasagar – The Glorious Ahom Heritage
Rang Ghar
An iconic 18th-century structure in Sivasagar, the Rang Ghar is Asia’s first amphitheatre and a classic example of Ahom architecture. This two-storied, octagonal monument was built using a unique blend of materials such as jaggery, black gram paste, elephant grass, lime, snail ooze, fish bones, mustard oil, bricks, and stones. It served as a royal pavilion where Ahom kings and nobles watched buffalo fights, duels, and sports events.
Talatal Ghar
Close to Rang Ghar, the Talatal Ghar or “Underground Palace” is the largest Ahom monument. It originally had seven storeys—three underground with two secret escape tunnels (one reportedly 16 km long). Though the underground chambers are sealed, the upper structures remain open for visitors.
Kareng Ghar
Another magnificent Ahom palace showcasing the architectural prowess of the dynasty.
Sibsagar Tanks
Large water tanks like the famous Sivasagar Tank were built using indigenous technology that allows them to retain water throughout the year.
Charaideo Maidams (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Located near Sivasagar, these pyramid-shaped burial mounds served as royal vaults for Ahom kings and queens. Their domed structures, covered with earth, are reminiscent of ancient Egyptian pyramids.
Tezpur and Surroundings
Da-Parbatia Temple Ruins
Near Tezpur, Da-Parbatia features the oldest known sculptural art in Assam. The door frame, adorned with carvings of goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, is a fine specimen of early Gupta-style artistry.
Agnigarh
Situated on a hill by the Brahmaputra, Agnigarh is steeped in legend. It is believed that King Bana built a fiery fortress here to protect his daughter Princess Usha. Today, it offers panoramic views of Tezpur and the surrounding river landscape.
Near Guwahati
Madan Kamdev
Located about 40 km from Guwahati on NH-52, Madan Kamdev is often referred to as “The Khajuraho of Assam” due to its ancient erotic sculptures. These 9th–10th century temple ruins remain shrouded in mystery with little historical documentation.
Ambari Excavations
Situated in the heart of Guwahati near Dighalipukhuri, Ambari reveals artifacts from two distinct cultural phases (7th–12th AD and 13th–17th AD). Discoveries include kaolin, red, and buff ceramic wares, along with Chinese celadon and green-glazed items.
Western Assam
Suryapahar
Located around 136 km west of Guwahati, this unique archaeological site showcases the harmonious coexistence of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain relics. Hundreds of carved Shiva Lingas, Buddhist stupas, Jain sculptures, and remnants of ancient housing structures have been unearthed here.
Kaziranga Region
Deoparbat (Deopahar)
Adjacent to Kaziranga National Park, Deoparbat is a small hillock with stone carvings and temple ruins from the 8th–9th centuries. The site is near Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary and is rich in biodiversity, including golden langurs and hoolock gibbons. The nearby hot spring adds to the site’s uniqueness.
Jorhat Region
Lachit Moidam (Hoolungapara)
This is the tomb of the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, who led the decisive victory against the Mughals in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat.
Raja Moidam & Purnananda Buragohain Moidam
Located near Tocklai, these tombs commemorate King Purandar Singha and his military advisor Purnananda Buragohain.
